Hoo boy! This is the episode of Post-Orthodoxy that had KBMF's Station Manager calling us dangerous!!! You can judge for yourself.
Based on complaints from listeners and the opinions of some of the KBMF board of directors, the Station Manager brought us into the office to tell us that KBMF DJs "have a responsibility not to work against the stated guidelines of the local, state, and federal government when it comes to dealing with this pandemic." WUT? Like, are we a social justice radio station, or not?
Because of how misinformed and dangerous he feels this episode was, he demanded that we not broadcast any data from any source "including academic studies or credible journalism," or any opinions or questions that may cause people to question or not follow government pandemic guidelines.
Not only did he claim we were sharing misinformation (false or inaccurate information, especially that which is deliberately intended to deceive), he also claimed that we only in passing mention the things we are talking about are our opinions.
We disagree with both those claims emphatically.
It's a 2 hour show, like usual, so if you want to focus on the juicy bits that made some listeners cringe, check out these segments the Station Manager claimed were the worst:
- 10:00-15:00ish minutes in we dissect a Facebook post shared by a friend of the show, talking about the CDC's updated provisional death count for Sars-Cov-2 (which you can peruse yourself here: https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nvss/vsrr/covid19/index.htm). What we found out from the station manager in our meeting, and from other friends who objected to us sharing that data specifically, is that that data was being passed around by a known Q-anoner, and *gasp* retweeted by Trump. Even though that data was direct from the CDC, the Q-anon tweet was censored by twitter for being misleading, and we talk about the misleading language in this segment.
- 31:45-33:45, 39:20-46:00, we share data from other countries, statisticians, economists, and epidemiologists that seems to show that no matter what measures (masks, closures, lockdowns) various countries and states took over the last year, Sars-Cov-2 affects the same percentage of each population, at about the same rates, as it travels around the globe.
- 1:13:00 to 1:45:ish - this whole segment had a lot of offending parts where we discuss data that seems to suggest that Sars-Cov-2, while dangerous and nasty, isn't as horrifically deadly as we were originally led to believe. Now, why would we even talk about this? One of Post-Orthodoxy's missions is to "have a better time, with more people, more often," which we're realizing often needs to be preluded by a mission to alleviate suffering. A lot of people are suffering (suicide, spouse and child abuse, heart-attack deaths in fear of hospital conditions, long-term mental health detriments, loss of home, starvation, loss of small businesses, loss of education) on top of the people who have died while infected with Sars-Cov-2 (since we started testing for it last November, about 3.2% of all positive tests have lead to death) and people who have suffered COVID-19 illness symptoms while infected with Sars-Cov-2 (remember, the vast majority of positive test cases experience no illness symptoms ever). If we could take care of the people actually at risk from Sars-Cov-2, while also alleviate the pain of people suffering from abuse, suicide, job loss, etc, wouldn't that be a worthy goal to discuss? Check out these timestamps the station manager thought were inappropriate, if you're pressed for time: 1:13:20, 1:20:00, 1:26:30, 1:30:30, 1:37:00
